Day Trail Guide - Upstream from Manningtree

This trail meanders up the beautiful River Stour Valley from the head of the marine estuary at Manningtree, through glorious pastoral scenery all the way up to Sudbury. It connects easily with the rail network at each end of the trail, making it a great choice for Londoners looking for a car-free awayday in the countryside.

The trail guide provides options to ride between 15 and 50 miles according to fitness and time availability. The route uses quiet country lanes, with no A roads and minimal use of B roads. Alternatively you can elect to use off-road tracks and bridleways for up to half of the route.

The itinerary for all 4 versions of the trail includes:

- a stop at Flatford Mill to see the unspoilt riverside scenes painted by John Constable.

- visits to the classic Constable Country villages of East Bergholt and Dedham (cream teas and riverside duck-feeding are optional but highly recommended).

- peaceful pedalling along leafy lanes through riverside meadows to the medieval village of Nayland where you may be lucky enough to see traditional ploughing by Suffolk Punch horses.

- gentle farming country on the southern slopes of the Stour Valley, offering lovely views across the river floodplain below.

Longer versions of the trail also include some or all of the following:

- a climb north out of the valley to the beautiful village of Stoke by Nayland and its iconic hilltop church spire.

- a climb south out of the valley to secretive Wormingford, and just beyond, the small airfield used by the Suffolk & Essex gliding club.

- a meander through the pretty rural hamlets of Great Henny and Little Henny.

- a delightful old railway trail skirting the west of Sudbury.
