Day Trail Guide - Roman River

The Roman River is a secretive tributary of the River Colne which wraps itself round the southern edge of Colchester. It is notable for its rich variety of natural habitats. Just a little further south, Abberton Reservoir and Mersea Island offer interesting optional extensions to the cycling circuit.

The trail guide provides options to ride between 15 and 50 miles according to fitness and time availability. The route uses quiet country lanes, with no A roads and minimal use of B roads. Alternatively you can elect to use off-road tracks and bridleways for up to half of the route.

The itinerary for all 4 versions of the trail includes:

- peaceful lanes and tracks through the intermittently wooded slopes of the Roman River conservation area.

- a full circumnavigation of Abberton Reservoir, the largest expanse of inland water in Essex, and one of Europe's most renowned wetland sites.

- gentle cycling through the lanes surrounding spectacular Layer Marney Tower.

Longer versions of the trail also include some or all of the following:

- a visit to Fingringhoe close to the coastal saltmarshes of the River Colne.

- a trip across The Strood (subject to tidal conditions) to reach Mersea Island.

- a circuit of Mersea Island with a chance to visit its vineyard or fresh seafood and oyster bars.
