Day Trail Guide - River Colne Valley

Heading upstream from historic Colchester, the River Colne heads into the rural heart of northern Essex, passing the spectacular Victorian Viaduct at Chappel and the fine Norman keep at Castle Hedingham on the way.

The trail guide provides options to ride between 15 and 50 miles according to fitness and time availability. The route uses quiet country lanes, with no A roads and minimal use of B roads. Alternatively you can elect to use off-road tracks and bridleways for up to half of the route.

The itinerary for all 4 versions of the trail includes:

- criss-crossing the picturesque rural Colne Valley near West Bergholt and Wakes Colne.

- a visit to Wormingfield Airfield, home of the thriving Essex & Suffolk Gliding Club.

- cycling right under the graceful arches of Chappel Viaduct, Britain's 2nd largest brick-built structure after Battersea Power Station.

- a visit to the ancient woodlands at Chalkney on the southern slopes of the Colne Valley.

Longer versions of the trail also include some or all of the following:

- an exploration of pretty Castle Hedingham village, nestling below the spectacular 11th century Norman Castle.

- lovely trail cycling through Markshall Wood, Great Monks Wood and Bungate Wood, with an option to visit Markshall Arboretum.

- cycling through the heart of Coggeshall, home to over 200 listed properties including Paycocke House and Grange Barn.
