Day Trail Guide - Constable Country

Constable Country is named after the artist John Constable who painted most of his pastoral landscapes here. The area is now protected as the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Beauty. Flatford Mill and the adjacent National Trust site are the main tourist destination, but they can get very busy, so a great way to fully appreciate the unspoiled natural beauty of the region is by bike using the myriad of minor country lanes (many of which are single track).

This tour takes you right round the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, exploring lowland meadows, meandering river valleys and gently rolling hills, topped with medieval villages and the churchtowers which featured so often in Constable's paintings.

The trail guide provides options to ride between 15 and 50 miles according to fitness and time availability. The route uses quiet country lanes, with no use of A roads and only a small amount of B road to allow access to village high streets. You can also elect to use off-road tracks and bridleways for up to half of the route.

All 4 versions of the trail visit Dedham, Flatford Mill and East Bergholt. Depending on your selected trail distance, other villages visited may include Stoke by Nayland, Nayland and Wormingford.

This trail guide is available free of charge when you hire a bike from Coolpedals.

It's also available for online purchase, in a range of digital and hardcopy formats, via the button below.
