Coolpedals biking holidays, fun bike ride, nice biking trails

Q. What sort of hire bikes do you offer and why?

A. We've gone for quality not quantity, and maintain a small fleet of really top-notch mens and ladies mountain bikes. These are far superior to most hire bikes, because we want you to really enjoy your day in the saddle! Our bikes are light enough to be efficient and comfortable for gentle on-road riding, but strong enough to take the strain if you'd rather let rip on the trails.

Q. What accessories are provided with the hire bikes?

A. All our bikes come ready equipped with 2 bottle cages (please bring your own bottles), a small seatpost bag with puncture repair kit, and a detachable handlebar bag with plenty of room for your camera, phone, snacks and a waterproof. Bike locks and tyre pumps are generally provided on a one-per-party basis to help minimise your load.

Q. What precautions do I need to take to prevent theft of the hire bikes?

A. If you plan to leave your bikes unattended at times during the day, we would recommend the use of a good lock at all times. We can offer a range of locks to meet the needs of different size parties. Please note however, that you remain fully responsible for the safe return of our hire bikes, regardless of whether you use no locks, your own locks, or our locks.

Q. What bike sizes do you have available?

A. We stock small, medium and large bikes in both ladies and gents frames. If you are shorter than 5 feet 1 inches or taller than 6 feet 3 inches, we will need you to supply your inside leg measurement and "ape index" before we can confirm whether our one of our bikes is likely to fit you properly. (Your ape index is the distance between your fully outstretched left and right fingertips, minus your height. Long arms = positive ape index; short arms = negative ape index).

Q. Do you offer any childrens' bikes for hire?

A. We do not stock any designated childrens' bikes. However, our small adult bikes will be suitable for most teenage children over 5 feet 1 inch tall.

Q. What is the maximum group size for bike hire?

A. Our standard maximum party size for bike hire with our delivery and collection service is 4 people. We can usually cater for larger groups if you use Langham as your cycling base.

Q. How do you ensure that I'll get the right size bike?

A. Our online booking enquiry form requests the height of all bike hirers, and supplemental information for any party members under 5 feet 1 inch (155cm) or over 6 feet 3 inches (191cm). This enables us to ensure that we have bikes available to fit all of your hire group. The supplemental information, where required, is inside leg measurement and "ape-index". Ape-index is simply the distance between your fully outstretched left and right fingertips, minus your height. So long arms = positive ape index, short arms = negative ape index).

Q. I've got very long/short legs/arms (delete as appropriate). Will I still be able to get a good bike fit?

A. See question above. Provided that you're not also very tall or short, it's generally easy to make small bike adjustments to achieve a good fit.

Q. If I come to Langham by car, do you provide free parking for the day?

A. Yes, we have plenty of off-road parking available.

Q. If I prefer to cycle one of your trails from Manningtree Station or Mark's Tey Station, can I park there for the day?

A. Yes, but you will have to pay for car parking at the station.

Q. What are the earliest and latest times for pick-up and drop-off of my hire bike(s)?

A. We try to be very flexible. If you're keen enough to choose a long day in the saddle, we wouldn't want to deter you! So our only stipulation is that you stick to daylight hours (our hire bikes are not fitted with any lights). And if you do ask for a very early start, please do turn up on time or you might find us a little bit grumpy!

Q. What if my scheduled train arrival is late?

A. Don't worry, we'll wait for you!

Q. What if I miss my scheduled train?

A. Please call us on 07766 747497 as soon as possible to advise us of your revised expected arrival time.

Q. What if train services suffer major disruption on the day of proposed bike hire?

A. Please call us on 07766 747497 as soon as possible to discuss options. We will either agree a re-scheduded date or, if you prefer, you can cancel with a full refund.

Q. How will I find you when I get off the train?

A. We'll make sure we're standing near the main station entrance wearing our best "coolpedals" tee-shirt.

Q. What is the latest time for return of my hire bikes?

A. Our only stipulation is that you must return the bike before dark (since our hire bikes are not fitted with lights). You'll also want to make sure that you don't miss your last train home of course.

Q. How easy is it to cycle out of Colchester and connect into your recommended biking trails?

A. Colchester is reasonably well served with a network of cycling paths, so for most Colchester Hotels it's a reasonably pleasant ride. However, it won't be as pleasant as our our out-of-town trails, so our usual recommendation is that we pick you up and drive you to your selected out-of-town trail starting point.

And if you do ask for a very early start, please do be ready on time or you might find us a little bit grumpy!

Q. Must I collect and return my hire bike(s) to the same location?

A. No, we're happy to deliver and collect from two different locations, so that you're not restricted to a circular route. Our online booking form allows you to select from a range of starting and finishing points. (Please note though that most of our day trail guides are designed as circular routes).

Q. How should I choose a suitable biking trail guide for the day?

A. Firstly, choose a trail that fits with your starting location. Check out our trails overview page to see which trails are directly accessible from Langham, Manningtree and Marks Tey. Secondly, choose a suitable version of the trail (Beginner, Occasional Rider, Regular Rider or Energetic Rider) according to your cycling experience and fitness.

Q. In what format will I receive my day trail guide?

A. When you collect your bikes, we will provide you with a compact local regional map marked up with your trail (yours to keep afterwards). We can also provide a larger local OS map if you wish (to be returned at the end of your ride). Additionally, if you request it when you make an advance booking, we can also email you a gpx file for pre-loading into your own GPS unit.
